Nuuanu is a beautiful area located in the city of Honolulu,Hawaii side of the Pali Highway. It’s very conveniently located is just a short, straight shot into downtown Honolulu and an easy drive to the H-1 freeway and Windward Oahu. Despite the close proximity to the busy downtown area and though the Pali Highway runs through the middle of the neighborhood, Nuuanu is an incredibly quiet, peaceful place to live. Following the slope of the Koolau Mountains, as they descend toward the ocean, the neighborhood feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, enveloped by mountains and lush, green vegetation. The houses in Nuuanu are on either side of the Pali Hwy, down quiet roads that intersect with the Pali and wind toward the mountain ridges on either side. The neighborhood stays so quiet because its narrow roads dead-end into the mountains. There are no through streets that offer shortcuts into downtown or to the Windward side. There’s also no real town center or commercial area in Nuuanu. It’s almost 100% residential – and residents like it that way. But because of the close proximity to a town, residents have easy access to shopping centers, malls, and everything else that Honolulu has to offer.
Nuuanu is an area with a lot of history. The land that’s covered by homes today, was once covered by taro fields, and the irrigation ditches that watered the taro hundreds of years ago still run through the yards of some Nuuanu homes. The Queen Emma Summer Palace is also located in Nuuanu. Built-in the 1800s, this is the place King Kamehameha III and his wife Queen Emma chose to escape the summer heat. The palace is a beautiful summer home, surrounded by an array of native Hawaiian flowers and plants, and open to the public for tours. The Oahu Country Club is another historic landmark. this highly-respected club is over 100 years old, has a beautiful golf course offering views of the Koolaus in one direction and downtown and the ocean in the other. With fine dining restaurants, an extensive fitness center, pool, and social events throughout the year, it’s a desirable place to spend your free time.
