Earwigs

Most consumers are going to encounter earwigs because they’re regularly found across the country. The small insect belongs to the Dermaptera order. They’re easy to identify because they have unique long bodies. Plus, their cerci are unmatched. They’re small pincers coming from the sides of their bodies. The side of the cerci can vary significantly. They range in size from a third of their body length to barely noticeable. You’ll also find that some earwigs have wings although others do not. Regardless, they’re going to have dark brown or reddish-brown bodies. While most are less than half an inch in length, the Saint Helena Giant Earwig is much bigger.

Researchers have identified at least 900 unique species of Dermaptera. The most common species of Dermaptera are found in areas with temperate climates. Do not believe the myth that earwigs burrow in human brains. It isn’t true.

Causes

Earwigs tend to enter homes when it gets hot and dry outside. As this happens, they’ll enter homes and hide in dark, warm areas. Once they’ve entered a residence or business, they’ll have access to tons of suitable hiding places. While they can hide anywhere in your home, they prefer hiding in kitchens, basements, and bathrooms. They remain hidden until it gets dark outside. As this happens, they’ll come out of hiding to eat fleas and mites. If you have a mite or flea infestation, you’ll likely encounter arthropods too.

Dangers

Despite the myth, you can sleep soundly knowing these pests aren’t dangerous. They will be a nuisance though. You’ll also have to remember that they can use their cerci to pinch your skin. Even when they do, they’re not strong enough to hurt you. They won’t break your skin or bring blood. The biggest concern linked to earwigs is the fact they could damage your plants. Get rid of them properly to prevent this from happening.

You should find a way to eliminate the earwigs in your home promptly. Ultimately, you’ll have to start by dealing with the earwig population around the building. Doing so is the best way to rectify the problem. If you can decrease the population of earwigs around your home, you can prevent them from invading. One way to achieve this goal is by switching your lights. If you’re using ordinary white or neon lights, you’re likely creating major issues for yourself. Switch to sodium vapor yellow lights because these pests do not like them. They’ll be less likely to approach your home. You’ll also want to prevent light from escaping your home at night.
