Common Cockroaches Here

You must remember that specific cockroach species are found in our area. Others are not.

German Roaches

The German cockroach is likely one of the most common species in our area. If you have a cockroach infestation, there is a good chance you have German cockroaches. They sometimes reach more than half an inch in length. They’re tan or light brown with a unique pair of racing stripes on the back of their heads. A female can easily produce egg capsules with more than 40 eggs in them. Get rid of them quickly or the infestation will continue getting bigger.

American Roaches

You’ll also likely run into American cockroaches. These pests can grow up to two inches in length. They’re reddish-brown. It doesn’t help that these hideous cockroaches can fly. Thankfully, they usually don’t infest residential structures. If they do, it’ll take a long time before the infestation severely worsens. Instead, these pests tend to stay outside around warm, wet areas. For instance, we regularly find them around sewer pipes and steam tunnels. If you have found these cockroaches around your property, you might have a broken plumbing pipe or trap.

Other cockroaches found in our area will be explored in greater depth below. They include Surinam cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches, and oriental cockroaches.

Pennsylvania Wood Roaches

Although they belong to the same species, females and males are much different. While males tend to have full wings, females do not. Plus, male Pennsylvania wood roaches are larger than their female counterparts. These cockroaches are primarily found in the Eastern portion of the United States. You might find them in our areas from time to time. They tend to fly toward lights at night. They’ll also be found around homes with wood siding, blocked gutters, and woodpiles.

Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches

These cockroaches are smaller than most since they only reach a third of an inch in length. They invaded the United States from Europe many years ago. Since they reached North America, their population has been increasing swiftly. They’re regularly found hiding in foliage outside homes. They can sometimes enter residential structures although they usually do not reproduce inside. Instead, they’ll fly toward your home’s lights in the middle of the night.

Oriental Roaches

Oriental cockroaches are larger than the other cockroaches in our area. They often grow over an inch so they’re bigger than spotted Mediterranean cockroaches. However, it should be noted that the appearance is drastically different from male to female. Females will never develop wings. Male cockroaches do although the wings are only three-quarters of their bodies. These cockroaches are cold-hardy. Therefore, you’ll likely find them hanging around your property in winter. They’ll feed on feces and garbage.

Smokeybrown Roaches

Smokeybrown roaches grow over an inch with some reaching an inch and a half. They’re reddish-brown. Most are found in the southern portion of the United States. They can also be found in other states. From time to time, they’ll travel around the country in shipping containers. There are a few differences between Smokeybrown roaches and oriental cockroaches.

Surinam Cockroaches

At three-quarters of an inch, the Surinam cockroach is smaller than others in our area. It is in the middle of the table. They prefer living in warmer areas so they’re not going to be found in the northern part of the United States. These cockroaches are unique because there are no male members. All Surinam cockroaches are female. To reproduce, the female cockroaches will hold eggs internally before giving live birth when the egg hatches.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

Finally, you may encounter brown-banded cockroaches. At half an inch, they’re smaller than others. They’re light-brown or tan. While they have a lot in common with German cockroaches, they do not have racing stripes.

Reasons For Cockroaches

Since there are numerous cockroach species, there are numerous reasons they’ll invade your home. In some cases, these pests are going to enter your home because you haven’t cleaned it thoroughly. However, poor housekeeping isn’t the only issue. Cockroaches can also invade properties due to broken sewer pipes, damaged plumbing traps, and overflowing gutters.

Dangers

You cannot ignore the potential dangers linked to cockroaches. These pests can be very dangerous. While they don’t sting, bite, or inject venom, they’re one of the most dangerous cockroaches in our area. Remember that cockroaches tend to crawl around in feces and trash. Therefore, there is a risk that they’re going to be covered in bacteria when they crawl onto your food. As this happens, your food might become contaminated.
